Accra, Oct.7, GNA- the Knights and Ladies of the St. John International of the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka in Accra on Sunday donated assorted relief items to the three floods affected northern regions.
The items included bags of used clothing and shoes, soaps, detergents and a cheque for two million cedis. Brother Dr. Godfred Annor, Past President of the group said the presentation formed part of the society's mandate of bringing relief to the less unfortunate and the under-privileged in society. He said the gesture was service to humanity especially at a time when affected people really needed help and appealed to other institutions to support the victims.
Mrs Agnes Chigabatia, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister who received the items said so far about 260,000 people have been displaced while 15000 metric tones of food items had been lost. She said a total of 70,000 buildings had collapsed while 33 deaths had been recorded so far. She commended the government for the prompt response to the plight of the three regions.
Mr. Francis Poku, Member on the Flood Committee said several measures had been put in place to bring the situation under control and lauded the contribution of International to solving the problem. The three northern regions were hit by severe rains in 24 and 25 August which resulted in the lost of properties and human life.
