3 Days Of MP`s Death

NDC begins campaign?
Only three days after the death of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South, Hon Kwabena Sarfo, rumours have it that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has begun serious campaigning in the constituency.

Last Saturday, members of the NDC at Offinso South and some high profile members of the party in Kumasi held a meeting to strategize for what they termed an “opportunity to win the seat”.

Rumours are filtering in that the meeting which was coordinated from Accra told the members that before Parliament is notified and the Electoral Commission announces the date for the bye-election, they should start their campaign as soon as possible.

The death of Kwabena Sarfo necessitates a bye election in accordance with the 1992 constitution. As has happened at some NDC a gathering, the meeting was not devoid of insults, as members were divided as who should run on the party’s ticket. Though some were behind Miss Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, who lost to Mr Sarfo in the last elections, others called for primaries to elect a new person.

In the 2004 general elections, the NPP got 19,694 of the votes while the NDC got 11,637. Kwabena Sarfo who won the seat for the NPP would be remembered for his role in the passage of the Disability Bill.
