Dear Editor,
it its rather surprising that the university authorities should bring up this topic (Legon Faces Serious Shortage Of Lecturer). Currently a pensioneered lecturer of the radiology deparment of the univ. of ghana medical school ,Dr. W. O. Brakohiapa , previously on contract, has been trying since October to last year to renew his contract with the University as a part time lecturer and his application has been blatantly refused , despite the fact that since Oct. last year there has been only one radiologist lecturer for the doctors training to become radiologists, and the fact that the West African College of Surgeons (W.A.C.S) radiology faculty ( which is the accrediting body for the postgrduate radiology program in the subregion ) is considering withdrawing the accreditation for ghana's radiology residency training program due to the decliinig performance of the candidates from a 100% pass rate in 2001 ( when there were four radiology lecturers) , to a 30% pass rate in 2002 (when there were two lecturers) and eventually a 100% failurer rate this year, 2003 (when there has been only one lecturer) and also since the Ghanaian radiology residency training program no longer meets their criteria for conducting such a postgraduate program , which states that : the institution conducting the radiology program should have at least two consultant radiologists, at least one of which should be a fellow of the w.a.c.s. How can the university then justify making such public statements when it refuses to employ one of Ghana's best and remaining radiologist Dr. W.O. Brakohiapa , a former examiner and fellow of the W.A.C.S. in the light of all the above.
