Accra, Nov 10, GNA 96 League leaders Ashgold will book a date with 2005 league champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko in this year's Sports Writers Association (SWAG) Cup match.
The match which is in honour of the late Henry Plange Nyamitei, a Patron of SWAG and one of the astute sports administrators in the country, will be played at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on December 17.
Mr Ebo Quansah, President of SWAG announced this at a brief ceremony in Accra, which saw the State Insurance Company (SIC) donating 65 million cedis to the Association for the organization of the match. The SWAG President regretted the delay in the organization of the match and attributed it to the tight calendar of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
He said the Association has therefore submitted a proposal to the Professional League Board (PLB) and the GFA to factor the SWAG Cup match in their next programme.
Mr Quansah said even though the Association is yet to receive a response from the PLB and the GFA, it is hoped that the proposal will be considered on its merit.
The SWAG President expressed appreciation to the SIC for their gesture but appealed for and increase of the package to ensure the smooth organization of the event.
Mr Peter Osei-Duah, Managing Director of the SIC called on corporate bodies to contribute to the development of sports since the mood of the nation is tied to the progress of the various national teams in international competitions.
He said the progress of the Black Stars in recent times is due to the huge investments made for the team by Goldfields Ghana Limited. The Managing Director said his outfit is ready to offer any form of support to the development of sports in the country, adding that they will lend their support to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Ghana CAN 2008 to ensure a successful event. 10 Nov. 06
