Awutu-Bawjiase (C/R), July 25, GNA - Executive members of the Awutu-Bawjiase Area Council have initiated a programme to raise a formidable soccer team to represent the Town in the National Division Two league competition.
The Council in collaboration with other football enthusiasts in the community have formed a number of football clubs to compete in a series of weekly soccer matches in the area.
Mr Charles Aloo, Chairman of the Area Council and the main organiser of the programme, told the District Chief Executive for Awutu-Effutu-Senya, Mr Solomon Kwarshie Abbam-Quaye, at one of such gala competitions at the Bawjiase Town Park at the weekend that stakeholders in the community are teaming up to raise a reliable soccer team for the Town.
He has therefore appealed to the District Assembly to channel part of its Common Fund for the promotion of football and other sporting activities in the district.
He said Bawjiase Chelsea, Juventus, Republicans and Bawjiase Eleven Wise are some of the local clubs being groomed to form the nucleus of a formidable team for the Town.
Addressing the executive officers of the clubs later, the District Chief Executive, Mr Abbam-Quaye stressed the need for managements of the various big soccer clubs such as Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak to contribute financially to the development of soccer teams in the rural communities.
Mr Abbam-Quaye also appealed to interested corporate bodies in the cities of Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi, Sekondi, Obuasi, Cape Coast as well as Traditional Councils to supplement efforts of the smaller clubs to unearth talented soccer stars.
He advised members of the football clubs in the area to be disciplined and hardworking to achieve the target set by the organizers of programme. Mr Abbam-Quaye said the formation of more football clubs would help unite the people for development. In the gala matches played on Saturday, Bawjiase Republicans thrashed Chelsea 6-0, while Juventus also Beat Eleven wise 6-2. 25 July 05
