Mr Ben Koufie, Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said although he has not been impressed by the performances of Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, at the ongoing LG Top Four Tournament, he is optimistic that the rough edges would be smoothened before the commencement of the continental club competitions.
Hearts of Oak, six times domestic League Champions would be playing in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions' League while Asante Kotoko, finalist in the CAF Cup Winners Cup competition last year, would vie for honours in the same competition this year.
In an interview with the GNA Sports, the GFA Chairman said hitherto, clubs participating in continental matches start without knowing their strengths and weaknesses but the LG Top Four Competition has afforded them (Heart and Kotoko) the ability to re-examine their weakness and improve upon them.
"You can see that none of the teams are able to possess the ball for a long time and there are too many faulty passes which affects the flow of the game", Mr Koufie said.
"Even though I am a bit worried, this is just the preseason and with time, the rough edges would be smoothened to enable them play to their normal game", he said.
Hearts, who won the Champions League in 2000, have had the unfortunate experience of being knocked out of the same competition in the first round on two consecutive years following the conquest.
These abysmal performances have been attributed to the late start of the local league, which starves the teams off the needed competition.
Mr Koufie expressed appreciation to the organizers and sponsors of the LG Top Four Tournament for their foresight to keep the clubs busy during the pre-season while at the same time giving them the avenue to raise some money.
"It has served a good purpose for Ghana football and has given us the hope that with the needed organization, football can attract the needed sponsorship to ensure its development".
