Black Stars beat Burkina to qualify for CHAN 2011

The Local Black Stars of Ghana secured a qualification to the second edition of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) with a lone goal victory over their Burkinabe counterparts at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.

Even though not an impressive performance from the Black Stars, the lone goal was enough for them to scale through after holding the northern neigbours, from Burkina Faso to a goalless draw game in the first leg two weeks ago in Ouagadougou.

After a scrappy output in the first 30 minutes of the game, the Stars conceded the midfield due to the inability of Daniel Addo and Joseph Ato Bissah inability to hold the strong and athletic Burkinabe's.

This gave the visitors the opportunity to explore the Ghanaian area creating series of scoring chances but Moussa Yedan and Sako Iddrissu were unable to utilise them.

The Stars begun to put their acts together after the 30th minute and they begun to punch holes in the defence of their opponents with continous pressure coming from Bismark Idan, Mahatma Otoo and Obed Owusu who led led the attack,.

The Ghanaians were able to find the back of the net in the 38th minute, through Idan, who weaved his through the defence and before placing ball behind the goalie for the opener and only goal.

With their dominance over the athletic looking Burkinabes' it was evident that the second goal was on its way and a perfect cross from Abdul Bashiru with a subsequent header from Idan missed target narrowly in the 43rd minute to end the first half.

The second half saw more improvement from the Ghanaian side as they created several scoring chances but again Idan and Otoo were not composed enough in front of goal to make the needed connections.

The Burkinabe's however ensured that the Stars were kept on tenterhooks anytime they initiated an attack as Rabo Ali and Yedan continued to squander scoring opportunities.

Another the clearer chance again came the path of Otoo in the 67th minute after Bissah set him up but with only the keeper to beat the striker surprisingly shot feebly into the waiting hands of the goalkeeper.

Both sides continued with their near misses till the final whistle but the lone ensured it was the Ghanaians who made it to the next and second edition of the competition.
