MARGAO, India: Zee Churchill Brothers today inscribed their name on the coveted Governors Cup, when they scored an emphatic 5-1 victory over Vasco Sports Club in the final of the Governors Cup football championship organised by Goa Football Assocation being played at Nehru stadium, Fatorda here.
Zee Churchill Brothers who were leading by 2-0 at the breather, slammed in three more goals in the second half. The goals came in through Nigerian new recruit striker Stephen Abarowei who scored in the 24th and 35th minute, medio Somatai Shaiza in the 55th and 77th minute and medio Jose Colaca in the 75th minute. Vasco's substitute striker Kishore Palkar reduced the margin in the 83rd minute.
Churchill started on a promising note and shot into the lead in the 24th minute of the first half through Nigerian Stephen Abarowei when medio Rockey Barreto and Fracnise Silveira in a combined move, sent a well meassured pass to Stephen, whose neat placement found the net 1-0.
Earlier in the 23rd minute Vasco had a good chance to forge ahead, but Bibian Ferandes instead of placing the ball into the net shot straight into the hands of rival goalkeeper Edward Ansah.
Inspired by the lead, Churchill attacked vigoursly and consolidated their lead in the 35th minute of the first half again through striker Stephen Abarowei when Fracnise Silveira from the top of the box centred the ball to Stephen, who without any hesitation banged it into the net 2-0.
Five minutes before the breather, Vasco had a golden opportunity to reduce the margin but Khogen Singh and Jude Odegah were not quick in taking the advantage, both missing the sitter.
The absence of Vasco's playmaker Gregary Clarke was felt very much today in the midfield as he was out for booking twice with yellow card. Vasco's midfiled play failed miserably in the opening session.
After change of ends, Churchill played with renewed vigour and further conslidated their lead in the 55th minute through medio Somatai Shaiza off a pass from Mahesh Gawali.
Medio Juse Colaco made it 4-0 off a pass from Somatai Shaiza in the 75th minute. In the next two minutes Somatai Shaiza struck his brace scoring the fifth goal for Zee Churchill. Somantai's long ranger shot found the net.
Few minutes before the long whistle, Vasco reduced the margin through substitute striker Kishore Palkar off a pass from Bibian Fernandes 5-1.
