Freddy Adu's quest to turn his career around has taken him to The Netherlands.
AZ Alkmaar, the current club of American international Aron Johannsson and former club of fellow USA striker Jozy Altidore, tweeted on Sunday that Adu had joined the team for a trial.
The 25-year-old has been out of contract since a six-month spell with Brazilian club Bahia in 2013. He had previously spent two years with the Philadelphia Union of MLS.
Adu joined D.C. United for the 2004 campaign at 14 years old, making him the youngest player in league history. His career has also taken him to Portugal, France, Greece and Turkey.
Adu has been capped 17 times by the U.S. national team, most recently in the 2011 Gold Cup.
