Accra, July 30, GNA - The News Boys of Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Saturday trounced the Golden Voices of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to win the GBC 70th anniversary soccer competition played at the EL-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra. The competition, which was played in a round robin, had the Blue Birds of New Times Corporation (NTC) and Metro TV as the other competitors.

GBC One lost to NTC by two goals to nil in the first match while GBC Two held GNA to a goalless draw in the second match. In the third match, Metro TV thrashed NTC by three goals to nil and in the fourth and final match GNA whipped a combined team of GBC One and GBC Two by two goals to nil.

The News Boys spotting their red and black stripped jersey over black shorts, carried the game to their opponents right from the blast of the referee's whistle and opened the scoring in the fifth minute through midfielder Gideon Charway. He headed home a corner-kick taken by winger Dan Aryeh. In the 10th minute goalkeeper Joshua Lamptey in the posts of GBC was penalized for having held the ball for more than six seconds after he had made a save.

The resultant indirect kick awarded in favour of GNA was kicked into the GBC net after a GNA player had stepped on the ball to allow another to kick it, but strangely enough Class One Referee Michael Dawutey disallowed it.

On the re-start, Central Defender, Felix Quaye of GNA fired home a 40-yarder (36.6 metres) from a free kick, which Keeper Lamptey had no answer to but Referee Dawutry again disallowed the goal. In the closing stages of the game, Centre Forward Eric Kwarteng atoned for the numerous chances had squandered when he beat three defenders of GBC on the run and slotted the ball into the net for the "oware'; draught and Ludo.

There was brass band music, playing popular highlife, hiplife and gospel tunes at the background. The Director-General of GBC, Ms Eva Lokko took the kick-off. She played in a soccer match between the Management and Staff of the GBC. The Management piped the Staff by a lone goal.
