Gabon to host next AWC

Accra, Aug 10, GNA - The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has given Gabon the right to host the next African Women's Championship (AWC) scheduled for next year.

The Central Africans pipped other competitors, Ghana, Nigeria and Egypt to the right, thus becoming the third only country to host the bi-annual championship previously hosted by Nigeria and South Africa. Ghana, until the Gabon declaration last week was perceived as the front liners in the race for the opportunity to host the ultimate ahead of other female compatriots on the continent for the first time in the 10-year history of the tourney.

The Gabonese are yet to make any appearance at the competition, which has the Super Falcons of Nigeria as winners of all the four previous championships.

The host country thus gains an automatic entry into the eight-country tournament, which has seen heavyweights like Ghana's Black Queens featuring in all the four competitions.
