Head Coach of Zambia’s U-20 side Beston Chambesi has backed Kwesi Appiah to succeed on his return to the Ghana senior national football team.

Chambesi, whose young Chipolopolo side won the Africa U-20 championship title, believes the former Ghana international would thrive as head coach of the Black Stars when given the needed support.

The 56 year old had his reappointment confirmed last month after ticking all the boxes in a coach hunting exercise conducted by the Ghana Football Association.

The former Ghana skipper took over from Avram Grant when the latter’s contract expired after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

It his second stint with the team following a fairly successful first spell from April 2012 to September 2014 which saw him become the first Black Coach to lead Ghana to the world cup.

Appiah’s second coming coincides with a period where the Black Stars’ prominence and dominance on the continent has plummeted.

Ghana’s inability to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations tournament means the 4 time Africa Champions await their first trophy since 1982.

The Black Stars are also in danger of missing out on the 2018 World Cup after failing to win their first two qualifying matches.

A dismal home draw to Uganda and an away loss to Egypt has rendered Ghana outsiders for that sole slot to Russia, with Egypt (2 wins in two) in a commanding lead in the qualifying group.

Beston Chambesi told Takoradi based Empire FM exclusively, that Appiah who arrived in Ghana last week Friday to begin his tenure, would revivify the Black Stars’ 2018 world cup qualifying campaign.

“Just give him the support, he is a hard working coach, he is a Coach who has a vision, just give him the support and I think he will take the team to world cup and even the African Cup” he said.

Beston Chambesi, a former Zambian international has also lauded the reappointment of Kwesi Appiah claiming it is a great move which will bring honour to both the country and the Coach.
