Youssouf Hersi, on loan to NEC from Ajax, opened the score in the 11th minute after soloing through Ajax's defense before firing home. Although Chivu replacement Yakubu twice hit the post, the Amsterdammers went into the break trailing 1-0. After the break Ajax upped the tempo and really began piling on the pressure and within eight minutes the visitors equalized after Substitute Sikora headed home a Jari Litmanen cross from close range.
