Glo to pay up GFA arrears this week

Former Ghana Premier League headline sponsor Globacom has promised to pay money owed the football association, officials have said.

The operator took over as the headline sponsor of the league in a five-year deal worth $15m in December 2008. Glo was expected to pay $3m to the 16 participating clubs per season until the end of the 2013/14 season.

At present, however, Glo owes the clubs a total of about $5.5m. Head of Marketing Communications at Glo Mobile Ghana, Dominic Icha told the media his company was determined to settle the arrears.

Until recently, the 16 Premier League clubs had agreed with the FA to waive 10 percent of the amount owed them after Glo made a promise of clear up the debt to the clubs by the end of May 2012.

Glo was expected to pay $2.3m after the discount. The clubs are now said to be demanding about $2.5m in arrears plus the total amount for the 2011/12 season.
