How Ghanaian players fared abroad

Anthony Annan and Gideon Baah hogged the headlines among Ghanaian players abroad as they won the Finnish League title with HJK Helsinki after winning their game over the weekend.

There were also goals in Norway for Nana Boateng and Mahatma Otoo while winger Albert Adomah and starlet Bernard Mensah saw red cards in their various games.

Former New Edubiase United striker Abdul Basit also bagged a brace for Free State Stars in the South African League.

In Dutch lower-tier, Kenneth Misa-Danso scored for Ajax Amateurs.

Striker Mahatma Otoo and on-loan Manchester City midfielder Nana Boateng scored in Norway while Bernard Mensah missed a penalty in Portugal, GHANAsoccernet.com’s Akyereko Frimpong has more on how Ghanaian players fared abroad over the weekend.

ENGLAND

Christian Atsu could not make it into the Everton first team squad as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby on Saturday in the English Premier League.

Defender Jeffrey Schlupp was also unused by Leicester City who were beaten 2-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon. 18-year-old English-born Ghanaian Hirma Boateng could not make the Palace squad for the game.

In the Championship, winger Albert Adomah was sent off while in action for Middlesbrough against Charlton Athletics in a game that ended 0-0 at the Valley.

Kody Arthur could not make the Birmingham City first team squad as they suffered a 2-1 home loss against Fulham at the St. Andrew’s Stadium on Saturday.

Ghana-born Norwegian international Alexander Tettey was booked in the 38th minute and he lasted lasted the entire duration of the game for Norwich City who posted a narrow 2-1 win over Blackpool at their own backyard on Saturday.

Still in the Championship, youngster Bernard Mensah could not make the Watford first team squad as they managed a priceless 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

Elsewhere in the League One, former Chelsea U21 captain Nana Ofori-Twumasi played the entire 90 minutes for Yeovil Town who suffered a 2-0 away loss at Crawley Town.

In the League Two, former QPR striker Patrick Agyemang lasted 79 minutes for Portsmouth who held Hartlepool United to a 0-0 stalemate at their own backyard on Saturday afternoon.

Former Arsenal U21 attacker Abu Ogogo was in full time action for Dagenham & Redbridge who beat York City 2-0.

A 72nd minute striker from former Liverpool U21 attacker of Ghanaian descent David Amoo helped Carlisle United to a 1-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

FRANCE

Winger Andre Ayew put up another inspiring performance for Olympique Marseille as he set up a goal for Ligue 1 leaders and helped them to a 2-1 win over Saint-Étienne on Saturday.

French-born Ghanaian defender Dennis Appiah was influential for Caen who held Lens to a 0-0 draw at their own backyard on Sunday night.

Former Ghana youth attacker Kwame Nsor could not make the Metz first team squad as they posted a heavy 3-0 win over Stade Reims on Saturday.

Evian Thonon Gaillard made it two wins out of two by beating Lorient 2-0 at their backyard. Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah lasted the entire duration of the game for Evian while attacker Jordan Ayew also started and finished the game in attack for Lorient.

In the Ligue de National, former Ghana U17 captain Charles Boateng played the entire duration of the game for Avranches who posted a 2-1 win Bourg-Péronnas on Friday night.

Strasbourg made good of themselves by beating CA Bastia 1-0. Ghanaian defensive midfielder Ben Amofa picked an injury in the 34th minute and was replaced by Strasbourg.

BELGIUM

Midfielder Bennard Kumordzi watched from the stands at the Cristal Arena as Sporting Charleroi held his Racing Genk side to a 1-1 draw in the Pro League on Saturday.

Winger Frank Acheampong played the last 15 minutes for table-topper Anderlecht who posted a 2-0 win over Zulte-Waregem on Saturday.

KV Mechelen handed Waasland-Beveren their third straight defeat in the league after beating them 2-0 at the Argos Oil Stadion Achter de Kazerne before 9000 fans. Ghana’s David Addy was sent off in the 32nd minute of the game while playing for Beveren. While French-born Ghanaian defender Jerry Vandam was unused by Mechelen.

Dutch-born defender Mitch Apau played in lateral defender for Westerlo who posted a 2-1 win over Cercle Brugge on Saturday.

Nana Akwasi Asare was influential for KAA Gent who fought from behind to hold Lokeren to a 1-1 draw in the Pro League on Sunday afternoon. In the Lokeren starting team for the game was Belgian-born Ghanaian Denis Odoi but youngster Eugene Ansah could not make the squad for the game.

In the Second Division, Ghanaian striker Prince Asubonteng scored the consolation goal for Dessel Sport who suffered a 2-1 loss at White Star Bruxelles on Saturday.

Striker William Owusu was booked in the 63rd minute and played the entire game for FC Antwerp who lost 1-0 against Sint-Truiden.

Midfielder Stephen Asamoah was in full time action for AS Eupen who beat Woluwe-Zaventem 2-0 at their own backyard.

GERMANY

Kevin-Prince Boateng returned from suspension to play 71 minutes for Schalke 04 who pulled a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in the Bundesliga. On the Dortmund bench was American-born Ghanaian Joe Gyau.

Baba Rahman played for Augsburg who won their third game in five after beating Hertha BSC 1-0 on Sunday evening.

Karim Bellarabi played full-time for ten-man Bayer Leverkusen who held Freiburg to a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

In the Bundesliga II, Philemon Ofosu-Ayeh was a full-timer for Aalen who were beaten 1-0 at Erzgebirge Aue.

In the Liga 3, Borussia Dortmund II were held to a 1-1 by visiting Stuttgarter Kickers. Ghanaian defensive midfielder Evans Nyarko started and completed the game for Dortmund while Ghanaian-born Canadian Randy Edwini-Bonsu was replaced in the 41st minute by Stuttgarter Kickers.

German-born Ghanaian Reagy Ofosu played 46 minutes for Chemnitzer FC who 1-0 at Dynamo Dresden.

Ghanaian-born ex-German international Gerald Asamoah was unused by Schalke 04 II who drew 1-1 with Koln II on Saturday.

ITALY

Juventus posted a commanding 3-0 win over Atalanta. Ghana midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah was rested by the Old Ladies however striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom played the entire during of the game for Atalanta against his parent club.

Midfielder Alfred Duncan was unused by Sampdoria who managed a narrow 1-0 away victory at Genoa on Sunday evening.

Young midfielder Godfred Donsah watched from the bench as his Cagliari side shocked themselves with a 4-1 win at Inter Milan on Sunday afternoon.

Isaac Cofie was replaced in the 80th minute by Chievo Verona as they shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Empoli.

Michael Essien recovered from injury to play the last 18 minutes for ten-man AC Milan who held Cesena to a 1-1 draw. Compatriot Sulley Muntari was unused.

Napoli stretched Sassuolo’s winless run in the Serie A further to five games by beating them 1-0 at their favourite Stadio Città del Tricolore. Ghana midfielder Raman Chibsah was unused by Sassuolo.

In the Serie B, Amidu Salifu played 63 minutes for Modena who edged Spezia 2-0. Ghanaian attacker Maxwell Acosty Boadu failed to make the Modena squad for the game.

Crotone and Vicenza split points after drawing 0-0. Ghanaian defender Moro Al-Hassan warmed the bench Vicenza bench.

Perugia posted a slim 1-0 win over Brescia. Former Inter Milan Primavera striker Isaac Ntow could not make the Brescia squad for the game.

SPAIN

Former Black Stars regular Derek Boateng was unused by Eibar as he watched their 0-0 draw at Athletico Bilbao from the bench.

Fatau Mohammed could also not make the Rayo Vallecano squad in their 2-1 away win at Levante on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid loanee Thomas Partey lasted 71 minutes for Almeria who managed a slim 1-0 away win at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday evening.

Paul Quaye could not make the Malaga first team squad for their 1-0 loss at Getafe.

In the Segunda Division, Black Stars goalkeeper Razak Brimah was not in the Mirandes team that suffered a 2-0 loss at Real Betis.

HOLLAND

Attacker Elvis Manu set up three goals and caused an own-goal for Feyenoord who posted a 4-0 victory over Go Ahead Eagles.

FC Twente made it four wins out of four after brushing aside FC Utrecht 3-1 on Sunday evening. Ghanaian youngster Shadrach Eghan watched the entire game from the bench but Dutch-born Rodney Antwi started and completed the game for FC Utrecht.

A 31st minute penalty helped FC Groningen to a narrow 1-0 home win over Willem II. Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Johan Kappelhof played in defence for Groningen.

Ajax Amsterdam posted 5-2 win over NAC Breda. Ghanaian pair of Kingsley Boateng and Jeffrey Sarpong both played in the game for Breda but youngster Kenny Tete could not make the Ajax squad for the game.

Erixon Danso warmed the Dordrecht bench on his return to the club and the Eredivisie and saw Vitesse Arnhem make mockery of his side by beating them 6-2.

In the second-tier league, NEC Nijmegen continued their leadership of the league after winning 2-0 at De Graafschap on Sunday. German-born Ghanaian defender Dennis Appiah played 90 minutes for NEC.

Jonathan Opoku came off the bench in the 71st minute to play for Oss who beat Telstar 2-1 on Saturday.

Jong Ajax held Emmen to a 2-2 draw. Dutch-born Ghanaian trio of Kenny Tete, Leroy Owusu and Elton Acolatse all started the game for Jong Ajax.

In the third-tier league a 4th minute strike from Kenneth Misa-Danso handed Ajax Amateur a 1-0 win over Genemuiden. Also in action for Ajax Amateur was Sir Ralph Owusu who also completed the game in defence.

TURKEY

Black Stars defender Jerry Akaminko is still in the treatment room as he was not in action for Eski?ehirspor when they held Besiktas to a 1-1 in the Super Lig on Saturday.

Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris was dropped to the bench and only came off the bench in the 72nd minute to play for Trabzonspor who split points in a 1-1 draw with Kas?mpa?a on Saturday.

In the second-tier league, former Asante Kotoko midfielder Yusif Chibsah was unused Alanyaspor who won 4-0 against Bucaspor. Torric Jebrin played the entire minutes of the game for Bucaspor.

RUSSIA

FK Ufa moved further away from the relegation zone after beating Mordovia Saransk 2-0 at their own backyard. Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong failed to make the Ufa squad for the game.

Black Stars midfielder Rabiu Mohammed was forced off the pitch with injury in the 39th minute while in action for Kuban’ Krasnodar who drew 2-2 at Dinamo Moscow.

PORTUGAL

Fit-again defender Daniel Opare could not make the FC Porto squad for their 1-1 draw at Sporting CP on Friday.

Former Ghana U17 attacker Emmanuel Boateng was red carded in the 13th minute while in action for Rio Ave who suffered a 3-0 away loss at Sporting Braga. His compatriot Alhassan Wakaso came off the bench to play Rio.

Former Mighty Jets defender Richard Ofori was a 73rd minute substitute by Académica who won 1-0 at Arouca.

Bernard Mensah squandered a 74th minute penalty for Vitória Guimarães who lost 4-0 at Maritimo. Quincy Owusu-Abeyie was not in the Boavista team that beat Gil Vicente 3-2.

SCOTLAND

Black Stars winger Wakaso Mubarak marked his debut in the Scottish Premier League by playing 89 minutes for Celtic in their 2-1 win at St Mirren on Saturday.

In the Championship, midfielder Prince Buaben returned to the Hearts of Midlothian starting line-up and completed the game as they beat Livingston 5-0.

SWEDEN

Midfielder Enock Adu Kofi was in full time action for Allsvenskan title-holders and leaders Malmo FF who beat Mjällby 4-1. Former Heart of Lions midfielder Kwame Bonsu also completed the game for Mjällby.

Nasiru Mohammed came off the bench to play the last 12 minutes for BK Hacken who posted a 3-2 away win over Kalmar on Saturday. Neither Richard Donkor nor Augustine Okrah made the Hacken squad for the game.

Ebenezer Ofori and Moro Ibrahim both started the game for AIK Solna who held Elfsborg to a 1-1 draw. Moro was replaced in the 71st minute but striker Kwame Karikari was unused as he sat on the bench.

Godsway Donyoh watched from the bench as his Falkenberg side posted a hammering 4-2 win over Norrköping on Sunday evening.

SWITZERLAND

New-boys Vaduz posted a 1-0 win over FC Sion. Neither Ebenezer Assifuah nor Ishmael Yartey was in the FC Sion team for the game. Assifuah is recovering from surgery. Former Hearts of Oak striker Samuel Afum played 73 minutes for BSC Young Boys who posted a 2-1 win over FC Zurich.

SOUTH AFRICA

Abdul Basit came off the bench to score a match-winning brace for Free State Stars who won 3-2 against Moroka Swallows.

In other games, Mpumalanga Black Aces managed a slim 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town. Ghana internationals Kwabena Adusei and Edwin Gyimah both played 90 minutes for Black Aces. CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Ghanaian quartet of Daniel Nii Adjei, Gladson Awako, Solomon Asante and Yaw Frimpong all started the game for TP Mazembe but they shockingly exited the competition after losing to Tunisian side ES Sétif.

Former Great Olympics defender Seth Konadu also played for CS Sfaxien who failed to reach the final after losing 2-1 against Vita Club.

DENMARK

Francis Dickoh watched the game from the bench as his FC Midjytlland side beat Vestsjælland 1-0. German-born Ghanaian defender Lenny Sowah failed to make the Vestsjælland squad for the game. Daniel Amartey and Danny Amankwaa both played in FC Copenhagen’s 1-1 draw at SønderjyskE.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Former Ghana U20 striker Francis Narh played full throttle for Banik Ostrava who beat Bohemians 1905 1-0. Midfielder Derrick Mensah was unused.

Kevin Luckassen was unused by Slovan Liberec who drew 0-0 with Mladá Boleslav. Former Liberty Professionals midfielder Isaac Sackey was not in the Slovan squad for the game.

NORWAY

Nana Boateng scored the opening goal for Stromsgodset who beat Viking 2-1. Adaw Kwarasey, Mohammed Abu and Boateng all started the game but Divine Narh was unused.

Former Hearts of Oak striker Mahatma Otoo scored the fourth goal for Sogndal who beat Haugesund 4-1.
