One of Ghana’s finest forwards who did not reach his full potential Yaw ‘Gbese’ Sakyi has admitted that he really enjoyed his spell with the Red Army although he had a wonderful season when he crossed carpet to the Rainbow family.
“I realized at a point in my career that society recognize you when you are active, so I decided to move on in life by travelling outside the country,” was his response to Happy FM’s Charles Osei Asibey question why he flew out on “Where are they.”
Currently domiciled in the United States of America on a greener pasture mission, his move to Accra Hearts of Oak from Kotoko, like Charles Taylor and other top player generated heated arguments between the two sides.
In fact, it took the intervention of the president of Ghana at the time Flt Lt JJ Rawlings to ensure his smooth transition to the Phobian family. He told “Where are they” that the technical handlers of the national teams during his peak preffered his foreign counterparts to the locally based players, hence his inability to realize his full potential.
Nicknamed ‘Gbese’ which means a Red Ant in Ga, Sakyi revealed that his predatory instincts during his days at Dansoman United earned him that name. Sakyi revealed that his deft touches during his peak carved a niche for himself, and that remains indelible in the minds of students of the game. According to the player, his late equalizer against Hearts of Oak at the Accra Stadium remains his best shot throughout his soccer career.
