Ex-Ghana international Joe Addo has eloquently praised former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, describing him as “one of the finest players that Ghana has ever produced”.

Appiah started on the local terrain with Hearts of Oak before transferring to Italy where he had very successful stints with Udinese, Parma, Brescia and Juventus.

After being plagued by consistent injuries, Appiah left Turin to Turkish giants Fenerbache where he cemented a cult status.

With the national team, Stephen Appiah made history by becoming the first Ghanaian to captain the Black Stars to the FIFA World cup in 2006 and also represented Ghana in the 2010 edition.

He is often seen as the greatest captain the senior national team has ever had, but Joe Addo sees more than just that.

The former Hearts of Oak defender believes Appiah had immense football talents and is a tad comparable to the legendary Abedi Pele, though the latter has an edge over the former.

“I think Stephen Appiah is one of the finest players that we’ve ever produced. Somebody, who could do anything, He can play as defensive player (holding midfield), he can play as an offensive midfielder, he can pass and he can score” Joe Addo told Joy Sports.

“You don’t get many players like that, few players have some of his attributes and the only player who was close to him was Abedi. Abedi was a little bit ahead of Stephen. But Stephen is one of the finest Ghana has ever produced”, he mentioned.
