Jones Refuses To Go Back

Jones Attuquayfio has refused to resume his position as coach of Hearts of Oak despite club officials reversing their decision to send him on extended leave. At an emergency meeting the club decided that the man who led them to the African Champions League and Super Cup titles last season should not now be sent away for 24 weeks.

But Jones has called their bluff and said he will not resume his duties until he gets a formal letter plainly stating that he is being invited back as the head coach of the club.

The African coach of the Year in 2000 told BBC Sport Online that he will not hold training sessions or be part of the club until an official letter is written.

"Just as they informed me to go on leave I want them to write to me again officially to continue my work," he said. "I didn't like the way the meeting went yesterday - I was told 'it's alright Jones, the matter is resolved' - I think some senior members in the club are underrating my potential."

Fans responded by chanting, "No Jones, no training", and confronting the man named as Jones' replacement.

Assistant coach Ofei Ansah was pushed and shoved and has made a complaint of assault to the police.

It is believed that officials decided to reverse their decision because of the fans reaction.

Jones is popular among the majority of Hearts fans for guiding the club to four successive league titles including a double last year.

The reason for the club wanting to get rid of Attuquayfio is unclear, though insiders say there exists a long-running row between the coach and his superiors who want more say in the running of the team.
