Liberty pull out of Confederations Cup

Dansoman-based premiership side, Liberty Professionals have pulled out of next year's Confederations Cup.

The decision came a few hours after the GFA/PLB confirmed Ghana’s representatives for next year’s CAF inter-club competition at a meeting with club representatives and CEOs at the FA secretariat yesterday. Club Founder, Alhaji Sly Tetteh told myghanafootball.com the club decided to inform the GFA about its inability to participate in the Confederation following a careful evaluation of their resources, which he pointed out will not be able to support their campaign if they progress in the competition.

According to him, they initially decided to confirm their participation in view of the CAF deadline, which the FA had to beat.

“We don’t have a stadium where continental matches can be played. If we decide to participate we may have to choose between Obuasi and Sunyani, which are both far from our home base.

“In view of that, we decided to write to the FA about our pull out. So for now, we are not participating in the competition again”, he emphasized.

Sly Tetteh, one of Ghana’s astute football administrators said playing either at Obuasi or Sunyani comes with its attendant financial demands, which the club is not ready to shoulder now, hence the plausible thing it had to do was to pull out.

Sly Tetteh added that whatever extra finance they had to inject into the competition will now be used to give the stadium they are building at Dansoman a facelift.

Liberty first participated in the Confederation Cup in 2004, where they put up a brilliant performance from the preliminary stage. But on the brink of qualification to the league stage, they ran into a wall – Sudanese side, Al Hilal applied the brakes on them through penalty shootout.
