England-born winger Lloyd Sam finally made his debut for Ghana in Tuesday’s international friendly with Canada which ended in a 1-1 stalemate at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington DC.
The New York Red Bulls winger, 30, stepped out of the dug-out in the 68th minute to replace Middlesbrough midfielder Albert Adomah who scored Ghana’s goal in the game.
Sam, born to Ghanaian parents in England and is related to former AshantiGold SC boss and Aspire Academy Director Captain Andy Sam, earned his debut Ghana call-up after Avram Grant handed him a late call-up along with three other debutantes.
The former Charlton Athletic winger had been chasing his dream of playing for Ghana since his days in the English Premier League could only get his chance when Avram Grant was short of players and decided to hand him a late call-up.
After a 22-minute showing against Canada in an unconvincing show from the Black Stars, Adomah will be hoping to get his chance one more time in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers and 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying games.
He was one of the three debutantes who played in the game. But he sealed his team-bonding moves when he put on show a customary dance performance after dinner in the team’s camp hours before the game.
