Accra, April 16, GNA - Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports has called on Ghanaian clubs to ensure transparency and accountability in their financial affairs in order to attract governmental support in their participation in continental competitions. He said government has a responsibility of providing financial support to Ghanaian clubs in the continental competitions since they represent the nation but added that this can only be done "if our clubs do the right things".
The Minister made these remarks at the Annual Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), where representatives of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and King Faisal and other participation club appealed for governmental support in their continental campaigns.
According to the representatives of the clubs, the financial commitments in participation in the continental competitions were so huge that they would not be able to bear them alone.
Mr Baah-Wiredu, gave the assurance that government would account for every pesewa at the end of its stewardship to the people, he therefore asked the administrators to ensure that any money given to the clubs are well utilised.
He added that for the continental clubs to get governmental support they must also fulfil certain responsibilities to enable the government have confidence in them.
The Minister therefore advised the clubs to submit their accounts for auditing to promote transparency and accountability.
Four Ghanaian clubs, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak, Kumasi King Faisal and Dansoman-based Liberty Professionals are currently representing Ghana in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Cup Competitions.
