Accra, May 3, GNA - The European Union in Ghana on Tuesday, opened a weeklong photo exhibition on the exploits of Ghanaian players in Europe, at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra. The exercise is part of the activities marking the European Union Week's Celebration, which is to commemorate the formation of the Union in 1950.
Among some of the pictures exhibited are the exploits of Ghanaian players such as Abedi Pele Ayew, Yaw Preko, Anthony Yeboah, Michael Essien, Kofi Amponsah, John Mensah and Sule Muntari.
Mr Stefan Frowein, Ambassador of the European Union to Ghana and Togo said the event, which is the first of its kind to be organised by the Union is to encourage young players to aim at greater heights by exposing them to the exploits of Ghanaian players in Europe. He said the exhibition is also to present to the young talents the fruitful relationship between Ghana and Europe.
Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports who opened the exhibition said the ministry would promote the idea by joining hands with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Sports Council (NSC) to institutionalise the programme and make it an annual affair.
The Minister said the performance and achievements of the Ghanaian players displayed in the pictures are indications of their hard work, commitment and sacrifice and therefore called on the youth to emulate their examples.
Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, Chairman of the GFA advised Ghanaian players to refrain from unnecessary and hurried trials in Europe and wait to gain enough experience and exposure on the local scene before seeking to join clubs outside.
