Ghana Under-20 coach Sellas Tetteh has named his final 21-man squad for the 2013 African Youth Championship (AYC) in Algeria with just three-foreign in the squad, GHANAsoccernet.com can reveal.
Coach Sellas Tetteh’s squad is dominated by players from the local league who helped the side qualify for the tournament in Algeria.
Defensive trio Prince Koomson, Joseph Attamah Larweh and Princebell Addico have been dropped for the continental showpiece.
The three foreign-based players in the squad are Frank Sarfo Gyamfi of South African side Maritzburg United, midfielder Clifford Aboagye of Italian side Udinese and Israel-based defender Baba Mensah.
Coach Tetteh broke the news to the players after Friday’s training session in Catalonia, Spain where the team is currently fine-tuning ahead of the tournament.
The 21-man squad is dominated by players from Tema Youth, the Port City club, who have concentrated their efforts in developing youth players in recent times.
Some players from Medeama, Berekum Chelsea, Wa All Stars and Liberty Professionals with some others from giants Kotoko.
The Black Satellites have several players based in Europe but because the Africa U20 competition falls in the middle of the season, clubs are reluctant to release their players.
Belgian side Anderlecht had agreed to release playmaker Frank Achemapong for the tournament but after excelling for them at the Viareggio tournament in Italy last week, they have decided not to release him to play for the Ghana U20 side.
