Berekum Chelsea have pulled the plugs on midfielder Jackson Owusu switch to Asante Kotoko in favour of a deal with DR Congo giants TP Mazembe, footy-Ghana has gathered.
The Brong-Ahafo side had blessed a move for the box to box midfielder upon his request to be allowed to ‘go home’ (Kumasi) after a long service at the club. Both clubs entered negotiations and reached at a fee.
Jackson was permitted to undergo medicals with the Ghana Premier League Champions but the deal hinged strictly on the payment of the transfer amount before the release of his cards to Kotoko.
“We have always made Kotoko know our readiness to do business with them but we can’t sell to them on credit anymore. We have done that in the past and they have still not completed paying the arrears,” Chelsea’s General Manager Nana Oduro Sarfo explained in a recent interview.
“They showed interest in our players and we negotiated well to reach a conclusion but we will not release the players if we do not receive the corresponding cash agreed. We need the money to make replacements and run our club as well. That has been our stance since then, he furthered.
But after several weeks, Kotoko’s slowness in paying up as per the agreed terms seems to have forced Chelsea to look at other transfer options for Jackson. The player reportedly left the country last Thursday in the company of his club’s GM Oduro Sarfo to finalize a deal with TP Mazembe.
