Sports Ministry directs GFA to get CAF to assess Legon Stadium for Black Stars Game

Minister for Youth and Sports, Yusif Mustapha Minister for Youth and Sports, Yusif Mustapha

Ghana’s Youth and Sports Ministry has formally directed the Ghana Football Association to inform the Confederation of African Football for an inspection of the University of Ghana Stadium.

This directive comes on the back of CAF’s order to revoke the Baba Yara Stadium’s approval as a Category 3 venue for Ghana, citing concerns with the pitch’s condition and other major defects after the AFCON qualifier game with Angola.

Ghana has been ordered by CAF to identify a new venue for its home games outside the country but the sports ministry is pushing for alternative venues to be in Ghana and has highlighted both the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium as potential replacements for upcoming international fixtures, including the Black Stars games in October.

In a statement by the ministry, the Accra Sports Stadium has resolved many of the issues and defects identified by CAF in prior inspections and can be an alternative.

The Ministry also identified the University of Ghana Stadium, which has already hosted CAF Category 2 matches, as another option upon inspection and approval for Category 3 status.

Ghana has been given a deadline by CAF to identify a new venue for the AFCON qualifying game with Sudan in October.
