Sports journalist releases album for Black Stars

Accra, Oct. 7, GNA - One of Ghana's finest sports journalists, Mr John Vigah of the New Times Corporation on Thursday, became the latest entry to the "Joy FM Black Stars Cheer Song Competition."

Recorded at the D-Sharpe Recording Studious at Nungua in Accra, the captivating song traces the Stars impressive soccer achievement on the continent.

It is spiced with inspiring lyrics like, "we are the champions, we fear no foe," and "we are the Brazil of Africa."

The simply lyrics are accompanied by a danceable rhythm and the song throws a challenge to the rest of the world, telling them to "just wait and see the Stars at the World Cup."

Close to 1000 participants have entered the competition of which the winner takes home a 1,500 dollars.

But Mr Vigah told the GNA Sports after the recording on Thursday morning that he was not motivated by the money but he just wanted to come out with a song that would motivate the Stars.

" We (sports journalist) need to let Ghanaians know that we don't jut write and talk about sports but can't also do other things, like singing to promote the game," he said.

Mr Vigah said it was a mystery that the Stars had never qualified for the world's soccer showpiece, saying that the song could help change the fortunes of the country.

The song begins with an opening commentary: "a stupendous play for the Black Stars who are now moving like a Chinese fire cracker" and ends with "it's a g-o-a-l, the World Cup qualifying goal has finally landed." The competition is organised by Multimedia Broadcasting Company, owners of Joy FM and its affiliates to provide a common song to cheer the Stars in their next qualifier against joint group leaders the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday at the Kumasi Sports Stadium. Both countries top the five-team log with seven points apiece but Ghana has a superior goal advantage.

Other contenders in the group are South Africa, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde Island. Only the winner qualifies for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
