Asante Kotoko captain Amos Frimpong insists his side will defeat Medeama SC in the Ghana FA Cup final at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi on Sunday.
The 25-year-old was an integral part of the squad that won the local league and FA Cup last season to achieve their first ever double since 1935.
Kotoko have suffered a lot of setbacks this term, losing their title defence and battling relegation at a point in the campaign, but with their recent rise after five unbeaten games, Frimpong is confident they will carry the day on Sunday to compensate their loyal supporters.
“We’re seriously preparing towards this weekend’s crucial game against Medeama because a win will send us to Caf Confederation Cup,” Frimpong told Goal.
“I’ve played in the FA Cup final before so I’ve given my teammates all the advice needed to see us through. The season hasn’t been a smooth one for everyone at the club especially when comparing it to last season but notwithstanding the difficulties, we’ve been able to make it to the final of the competition and will win it to appease our troubled supporters.
“It won’t be an easy game to be honest. We’ve played twice in the league this season and both games ended in a draw but I strongly believe Kotoko will emerge winners.”
Medeama are likely to miss the services of their star striker Nathaniel Asamoah who joined Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca on Thursday in a three-year deal. The former Kotoko striker has scored 18 goals in the league but manager Tom Strand can rely on Kwasi Donsu who has scored two goals each in the quarter and semi-finals of the FA Cup respectively.
Kotoko posted a 2-1 defeat to Inter Allies to win last season’s edition thanks to Seidu Bancey’s extra-time winner after Talla Ndiaye had cancelled Richard Mpong’s first-half opener.
Manager David Duncan will also be hoping to win his first major trophy after replacing Didi Dramani mid-way this season to equal the achievement of fierce rivals Hearts of Oak who have won the trophy nine times.
