Zambia sports minister threatens to disband Chipolopolo

Zambia sports minister Chishimba Kambwili has branded the Chipolopolo as rubbish and threatened to disband the team after their woeful showing over the weekend in their 2014 World Cup qualifier.

Kambwili warned the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) that the government’s sponsorship of the team could be withdrawn if the dodgy performances of the Chipolopolo continues.

The Chipolopolo were held to a 1-1 by minnows Lesotho which boosted Ghana’s chances of topping the group after the Black Stars thrashed Sudan 4-0 in the group’s other game in Kumasi on Sunday.

The government has now threatened to disband Chipolopolo following the result in Maseru with Kambwili saying FAZ and the entire national team must take responsibility over Zambia’s recent poor showing.

“I want to warn FAZ and the players that if they don’t improve their game we will be forced to withdraw sponsorship as government and disband the team,” he told ZNBC Sports on Monday.

“The result that we saw yesterday (Sunday) can only be described as rubbish

“We have given them enough resources and what we are getting leaves a lot to be desired.

“We can’t continue spending tax payers money like this without getting results. We were drawing at the Africa Cup and we have continued with the same.”

Ahead of the Lesotho match, Kambwili had told Chipolopolo that qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup was non negotiable.

The result in Maseru has boosted Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup even though Zambia got three free points after a protest against Sudan.
