The 9th Accra Seniors Open Tennis served off to a thrilling climax last weekend with the Accra Lawn Tennis Club organizers satisfied with patronage, atmosphere and the competition itself that unfolded during the 10-day event.
In the end, the various winners in the various categories and even semi-finalists and quarter finalists went home with various prizes including a total of 28 dry irons, 6 pieces of hairdryers, 26 steam irons, 16 blenders, 10 Multi TV decoders, 4 LG TVs and a cash prize of one thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢1,000) to the men’s singles 25+ years winner Alfred Arthur.
Arthur defeated Solomon Ocran by two sets to one in the final to run away with the champion’s title. Kate Coleman won the 25+ ladies singles with Augustina Yamak claiming the ladies 35+ category. Doe Adjani was the men 35-44 years champion, Dowuona won the 45-54 years category, Lecher emerged champ of 55-64 years division and Prempeh Bannerman won the 65+ years division.
The doubles and mixed doubles were also keenly contested which ensured that the final day of competition last Saturday travelled deep into the night. This according to Paul Hammond, Chairman of the Accra Lawn Tennis Club, has informed the organizers to restrict the competition to only seniors in future. “This tournament has always been the preserve of the seniors so we will look at giving the youth another platform to explore talents,” Mr. Hammond stated.
