Defending champion, Jeff Bagerbaseh and seven others have qualified for the quarter- finals of the second edition of the annual McDan tennis Open championship at the Accra Sports Stadium.
With the finals scheduled for Saturday, the tournament has witnessed about 85 participants; 15 females in the five- day tennis fiesta.
Jeff Bagerbaseh defeated Isaac Bemfo 6-1, 6-0 at the preliminary stage with Eric Tetteh Nartey beating Patrick Tenkorang 6-1, 6-2 and Daniel Anum Quartey eliminating Bismark Dwuona 6-2, 6-2 to book their places in the quarters.
In other matches, Charles Asomani defeated Reginald Okantey 6-3, 6-1, with Stephen Nortey losing 6-3, 6-4 to Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo, whilst Benjamin Fumi and Francis Akpese won their games against Nakavi Alisi and Andrews Appiah 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 7-5 respectively.
They await winners from the last round of the preliminaries for the quarter finals stage challenge.
The Vice President of the Ghana Tennis Federation Isaac Aboagye Duah told GNA Sports that, the tournament forms part of efforts to prepare athletes adequately ahead of the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville and the Davis Cup in November.
He added that "The tournament is an excellent event and the athletes are in good shape. There is an increased in participation as compared to the first edition. This is a platform for players to sharpen their skills and prepare well for international events and this event clearly shows tennis will improve with the needed support and motivation’’.
The champion will walk away with 2,000 cedis plus some products.
