Benjamin Fumi won his first National Ranking title with a victory over Daniel Quartey in the Alkamin 2017 2nd National Ranking Tour final with a breathtaking 6-1, 6-3 victory in an hour and 37 minutes, Fumi joins other top 10 players who have won the National Ranking title at the Accra Sports Stadium Center Court.
“I still think that I’m dreaming, it’s a strange feeling. I have played so many finals; I never expected to win a National Ranking Tour. And right now I just did it”. Said Fumi
Fumi added that to be able to do it here in Accra is something special. The fans were great.
First set
Quartey could not keep hitting with accuracy for long, allowing Fumi to break his serve in third game to lead 2-1, when he made three mistakes on his forehand. After Fumi winning his serve to lead 3-1, He overcame another break point with a kick second serve to move up 4-1 and raised his arms in triumph as he returned to his chair. He sealed the win a first match point when his opponent sent a return long.
Second set
Quartey failed to seize his chance in the third game when Fumi double-faulted to 0-40 down. Fumi kept his cool and won five consecutive points to move up 3-2. After long rallies, Quartey smashed winner and was rewarded with a break in the sixth game as he pushed Fumi into a flow of mistakes with a series of deep returns.
But the rallies swung again in favor of Fumi as Quartey made several unforced dropping his a fourth time. Fumi broke again for a 5-3 lead, but Quartey failed to hold his serve in the next game. Fumi won 6-3 first set.
Quartey Quartey who will be celebrating his birthday on the Sunday 19 March 2017 after the lost said “I worked very hard to get where I am, I fight a lot; probably Fumi deserved it a little bit more than me, I’m just going to keep trying. I feel I am back at a very high level.”
