Ghana?s junior tennis team yesterday presented silverware they clinched at the just-ended International Tennis Federation(ITF) and Africa Junior Tennis (CAT) in Egypt to the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The 26-nation U-18 competition which took place from March 29 to April 18 saw Ghana?s Emmanuel Mensah and Owusu Menford teaming up to grab silver in the men?s doubles.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council, Prince Oduro-Mensah, lauded the contingent for the honour done the nation.
To him the team?s achievement was an indication of the fact that the lesser funded disciplines, given the needed attention, would place Ghana on a higher pedestal.
Mr Oduro-Mensah commended the team, saying ?even though we could not support you as expected because our coffers were depleted owing to earlier expenses we offered the Commonwealth Games contingent, you did not dissapoint us??.
He promised them of his outfit?s continued support and suggested to the officials to present their budget to the council on time.
The Chief Sports Development Officer Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah, thanked the NSC for the dynamic leadership qualities demonstrated and promised the team a package from the deputy Minister of Health Mr O. B. Amoah soon.
Dr Owusu-Ansah presented a ?20 million cheque to the Ghanaian contingent that emerged winners in an ITF competition hosted by Benin last year.
In a related development, Ghana?s Japhet Bagerbaseh, Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo, Anita Cudjoe and Linda Parker have been selected by ITF for a month?s training tour in South Africa.
