Accra, April 1, GNA- A total of 172 players have registered to participate in the Juvita Open Tennis Championship scheduled for the tennis courts of the Accra Sports Stadium from Friday April 2 to Saturday April 10.
The 12.1 million cedi event which is being sponsored by Primo Industrials, producers of Juvita fruit drink will be open to Men, Boys Under 10, 14 and 16 whilst the girls event will be open to Under 13 and 16 years.
The eventual winner of the men's event, according to information gathered by the GNA Sports would take home two million cedis whilst the runner up and the second runner up would take home one million cedis and 500,000 cedis respectively in addition to products of the company.
Winners of the girls Under-16 and Under- 13 would also take 700,000 cedis and 300,000 cedis respectively in addition to products of the company. For the boys Under 10, 14 and 16 categories, the winners would receive 250 000 cedis, 300, 000 cedis and one million cedis respectively. Cash prizes and Juvita products would also be awarded to all competitors who reach the quarterfinals stage.
In all, 62 players have entered the Men's Open event whilst a total of 94 boys have entered for the Under 10, 14 and 16 age categories. Information also indicates that a total of 25 girls have registered to partake in the Under-16 and Under-13 divisions. Among the noticeable names that have entered the men's event include Patrick Nortey, a member of the Ghana Davis Cup Team and Frank de Souza from the University of Ghana among others. The girls' event would see the renewal of the fierce rivalry between up coming players such as Abigail Opoku Mensah and Mariama Hamidu all from Winneba. The weeklong championship would be under the auspices of the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA).
