A section of Nungua Youth on Monday, May 28, engaged in a mini table tennis championship organised by Apostle Samuel Boadu Anum, the chairman of the Nungua JL Table Tennis Club.

As part of efforts to help popularize the sport in local communities, Apostle Boadu Anum has taken up the initiative of sustaining the growth of the sport and dignitaries including Nii Gonti, Nii Sookpoti Jaasey all of Nungua Krowor and Ghana's top table tennis seed, Derek Abrefa graced the occasion.

The mini championship saw lots of youth competing for the various prizes at stake, but Samuel Black Panther emerged the overall Most Valuable Player (MVP) as he took home a trophy and a bag of rice.

Samuel Osei Hagan and Sarpong Owusu placed second and third respectively as they also took cartons of drinks and boxes of biscuits.

Apostle Boadu Anum, highlighted the need to nurture and unearth talents in table tennis which looks a promising sport in Ghana.

"Looking at the recent performance at the Commonwealth games by our champion and national players, I realised Ghana has talent s when it comes to the sport and I would not stop encouraging the young and upcoming youth.

''I would make sure I sustain this weekly tournament until a champion emerges from Nungua township.

“Nungua has talented table tennis players and I would help unearth those talents until Nungua becomes a well known table tennis town. I believe with the assurance of our Nations Top seed Derek Abrefa, I can make this dream achievable," he stated.

Meanwhile, table tennis will be one of the major sporting activities during this year's Homowo Festival as more youth within the Ga communities are expected to compete in, later in the year.
