Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His comments after the NPP's defeat in the general elections of 2024 have generated discussions, according to a video posted by verified blogger EDHUB on X (previously Twitter).
NAPO was pleased with the Ashanti Region's results, noting that the region had a 65% voter turnout in spite of the party's loss. This, in his opinion, made a substantial contribution to the NPP's electoral campaign. His remarks regarding the Ashanti Region, however, have sparked new discussions among Ghanaians, with many raising concerns about the party's over reliance on the area for electoral success.
NAPO also addressed the ongoing violence by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following their victory. He drew comparisons to similar incidents in 2009, noting that back then, NDC supporters attacked various institutions and, in some cases, even turned on themselves. He urged for calm and respect for democratic principles.
NAPO went on to say that Ghana has a tendency to forget its blessings easily, drawing a comparison between the country's mindset and Israel's biblical past, where people frequently lost God's goodness in a short period of time. Some saw this comment as a subtly critical assessment of Ghanaians' perceptions of the NPP's leadership.
### Mixed Reactions from Netizens
The video sparked diverse reactions online:
@kuhb: "He shouldn’t be given a microphone ever again."
@YaraAmicutie: "He should add 2016 too. Suddenly everyone has amnesia over the happenings of 2016 when NPP won. Their chairman, Freddy Blay, even justified it."
@Cypher:"Your downfall is because you always focus on Ashanti Region as if they’re the only voters. Even 100% turnout there won’t guarantee victory."
@ayim_Ama: "You guys should know by now that there’s no safe region for any party. Appeal to all regions like the NDC does and stop this Ashanti craze."
-@amoako: "These guys still don’t get it; in fact, they’ll never get it."
The continuing discussion regarding the NPP's election defeat and its future political strategy has been fueled by NAPO's comments.
