On Friday, October 18, 2024, a swarm of bees caused panic and disruption at the Sunyani Central Mosque, forcing the early end of Islamic services. The incident occurred around 1:20 PM during the regular Friday prayers, as hundreds of worshippers were gathered.

Congregants, many of whom covered their faces to avoid being stung, were forced to flee the mosque. The chaos particularly affected the elderly and several women who were trapped as the bees swarmed the area. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Bono Regional Command and the Ghana Ambulance Service quickly responded, helping to manage the situation and rescue those affected.

The bee invasion extended beyond the mosque, disrupting nearby shops and small traders along the Sunyani-Zongo one-way. Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) Kwame Adomako Antwi, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He also noted that some firefighters were stung while assisting congregants.

According to ADO1, the GNFS initially responded to a distress call reporting a fire at the mosque, only to discover upon arrival that bees had infiltrated the premises. The affected individuals have since received medical treatment.

During a visit to Sunyani Zongo, some members of the Muslim community expressed shock at the unprecedented bee invasion, stating that this was the first time such an event had occurred at the mosque.
