Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie, Chair of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders for South Africa has shared his candid views about the 2024 election results.
He reiterated that, the election of John Mahama is a feather in the cap in Ghana's democratic journey, emphasising it shows Ghanaians cannot be taken for granted.
Speaking on the AM Show News Review on JoyNews, Tuesday, December 10, 2024, Mr. Quashie emphasised, the overwhelming endorsement of the NDC signifies that the Ghanaian voter is enlightened enough to appreciate the actions and inactions of politicians.
The outcome of the elections should put Ghanaian politicians on their toes since silence can't be equated to docility from the electorates.
In assessing the contributions of the of the NDC's running mate to their victory, he averred whiles the media limelight was focussed on the flag bearer, John Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was focussed on identifiable groups, especially women. "This ensured we got the women's votes. Though she wasn't loudly seen within the media, she really worked", Mr. Quashie stressed.
Reacting to the post elections violence, the SA Council of Elders Chair noted, such actions are condemnable. "The statements by Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman and that of the President-Elect all condemn such actions. President Mahama said it wasn't right to destroy public facilities just because of an election's outcome", he referenced them.
According to him, the jubilant mood of Ghanaians, especially the NDC supporters is understandable but, "the time has come for them to recoil into their shells, halt the jubilation, focussing on how to help Pres Mahama to have a smooth transition. We cannot continue on this rampage. It's time to let cool heads prevail", he cautioned NDC supporters.
When he was asked whether there was a miscommunication on the part of the leadership of the party resulting in the pockets of violence, he said, there was no miscommunication from the Election Directorate but, the party didn't trust the EC going into the elections. "We wanted to ensure everything was done right. Being vigilant isn't synonymous to being violent. I don't think the Election Director or any party official would authorise any party member to be lawless and destroy state property", he clarified.
In his concluding remarks, the SA NDC Council of Elders Chair categorically said all the pockets of violence are condemnable and mustn't be condoned. "Ghana has won and we must all grow together", he ended.
