The violence and turmoil that have broken out in the wake of the general elections in 2024 have drawn the serious concern of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference.Travel packages
The Bishops denounced in a forceful statement the rioting, looting, and acts of violence that have disturbed the calm in several regions of the nation, resulting in fatalities, property damage, and widening rifts between the populace.
“These actions are unacceptable and go against the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear,” the Bishops stated.
The Catholic Bishops Conference has urged Ghanaians to preserve the peace that has been the defining feature of the country's democratic processes and has demanded an immediate end to any violent acts.
They underlined that using violence and destruction to vent political disapproval damages society's most vulnerable citizens and threatens democracy.
In particular, the Bishops urged political party leaders to govern responsibly during this crucial time. They called on leaders to aggressively advance peace and respect for the rule of law, as well as to condemn any illegal acts by their followers.
“Your role as leaders goes beyond seeking power; it involves guiding your followers with wisdom, promoting peace, and ensuring the well-being of every Ghanaian,” they added.
In their speech, the Bishops urged the Ghana Police Service and other security forces to continue being watchful and acting professionally. They emphasized that in order to maintain justice and safeguard people and property, security forces must take firm action against violent offenders and treat them like criminals, regardless of their political connections.
The statement stressed that "justice must be served."
The Bishops extended an invitation to the public, civil society organizations, and religious leaders to work together to bring peace and unity back to the country. They emphasized the value of communication, respect for one another, and solidarity in resolving conflicts and advancing as a single people.
“May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events,” the Bishops concluded, expressing hope that with collective commitment, the nation will emerge stronger and more united.
