A country that is battling with daily exchange rate depreciation and overwhelming importation of almost every need must start thinking of adding value to its raw materials.
A vision leader of which Ghana has deficiency for the past 6 and a half years has to leave with a leader that continues to blame his ancestors for being a popular failure whose desires are to quickly run to the international market to start borrowing to finance his profligacy lifestyle.
Ex-President Mahama envisioned the need to have the first ever fish processing plant to process fish for export to rake in foreign exchange to cushion the country's currency against other trading currency and also to add value to fish under proper hygienic conditions.
The Elmina fish processing plant had an office complex, a storage facility, an auction hall, a daycare school, and a fish processing facility. The vision was to add value to the fishing industry that has been operated on primary production since creation.
A change in government in 2017 saw the elephant family convert the fish processing plant into an ice block plant. Only ice blocks were produced for fishermen to purchase. The president came to commission the Elmina fishing port, and as a good citizen, I went to have first-hand knowledge about the facility, and my eyes caught the attention of a wall between the fishing processing plant and the fishing processing port.
I sought to ask questions, but the answers from the observers are as good as yours! I toured the area, and the facilities provided were offices, sheds, an auction hall, and a landing area. I was amazed Ghana still repeated the same old-age Sam Bosumtwi fishing port at Sekondi, which concentrated on primary production in the 90's
I'm appealing to the conscience of the President to integrate the fishing processing plant into the fishing port to help add value to our fishing industry and also to resource the fishing plant to purchase fish across the coastal communities and also to fight trawlers on our waters.
A functional fish processing plant will limit the uneasiness fisherfloks and the industry go through when it close season.
May God bless Ghana.
