Awula Serwah, Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, has voiced her disappointment with Organized Labour for suspending their strike against illegal mining (galamsey). The strike was aimed at pressuring the government to take urgent and decisive action against galamsey activities, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies. Serwah highlighted that despite promises, the government has failed to declare a state of emergency or revoke mining licenses for operations in sensitive ecological zones.

She emphasized the pressing need for a more serious approach to combat illegal mining, stating that the country’s environmental sustainability is at risk. Serwah also expressed concerns over the inconsistency in how illegal miners are treated compared to activists protesting against the destruction caused by galamsey, calling for more accountability and stronger action from the government.
