Former President John Dramani Mahama has fired back at President Nana Akufo-Addo over recent comments surrounding the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy. In a pointed response, Mahama quipped, "When you stop sleeping, you will hear clearly my position on Free SHS," addressing claims made by Akufo-Addo that Mahama opposed the policy when it was introduced but now tries to take credit for it.
The disagreement stems from Mahama's stance on Free SHS, a flagship program of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. While Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama for allegedly being against the policy from its inception, the former president clarified that his government initiated steps towards free education by enhancing infrastructure and laying the foundation for such a policy. However, he has been vocal about the policy’s implementation under the current administration, pointing out various challenges such as inadequate resources and overcrowding in schools.
Mahama reiterated his support for free education but emphasized the need for better planning and a more sustainable approach to ensure quality education for all Ghanaian students. The exchange between the two political leaders has added fuel to an ongoing debate about the future of education in the country, as the 2024 elections approach.
Stay tuned for further updates as the political discourse around Free SHS continues to unfold.
