As part of the government's ongoing efforts to tackle illegal mining, the "Operation Halt" team, comprising military personnel, has destroyed several pieces of equipment used in illicit mining along the Birim River. The operation, aimed at restoring water bodies devastated by galamsey activities, saw the destruction of 18 chanfan machines, which are used to extract gold from riverbeds.
The task force, working in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, remains committed to clearing the affected water bodies, with soldiers deployed in the region for the next two weeks. Despite some illegal miners fleeing after receiving tip-offs, the military remains optimistic that the continued presence will help reverse the environmental damage. The initiative reflects growing public pressure for stronger government action to protect Ghana's natural resources.
