FEDERATION OF GHANA MEDICAL LABORATORY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATIONS (FG-MELSA)

FG-MELSA, or the Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students' Associations represents a collective Medical Laboratory Students from various universities and training institutions in Ghana, working together to promote professional interests, share common knowledge, support one another in academic and professional pursuits, recognize the need for a unified voice and means to address concerns, and promote profession.

FOUNDING LEADERS
FG-MELSA was established in 2012 & founded by a H.E Maxwell Akonde during the tenure of a renowned Scientist (Hematologist) called Dr. David Sebbie Sackey, Currently the Chairman for Society Of Medical Laboratory Managers, Ghana as the GAMLS Vice President responsible for students affair.

In the early days, FG-MELSA focused on building its membership, establishing a leadership structure, and defining its mission and objectives. The association faced challenges like funding, recognition, and coordination among member associations. As FG-MELSA gradually grew, it has expanded its activities to include:
- Organizing conferences, workshops, Summits, and seminars on Medical Laboratory Science & beyond the profession.
* Providing training and mentorship opportunities for members.
* Advocating for the interests of Medical Laboratory Students and professionals in Ghana.
* Collaborating with national and international organizations to advance the field.
* ⁠Introduction of Career Opportunities for members
* ⁠ETC

FG-MELSA FOUNDATION PRESIDENT (1st President of FG-MELSA)
Mr. Maxwell Akonde, a trained Medical lab scientist,played an instrumental role in the formation of the FG-MELSA and became the foundation President in 2012. Maxwell Akonde currently holds an MPhil in Haematology from KNUST and he’s a PhD Candidate at the University of South Carolina. Maxwell Akonde is a passionate advocate for best laboratory practices in Ghana. He has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities both home and abroad and remains an excellent mentor for many young medical laboratory professionals.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Over the years, FG-MELSA has achieved numerous milestones,which includes;
* Massive Increased membership and representation across Ghana.
* Successful events, conferences, Summits, Seminars and training programs.
* Improved recognition and partnership with key stakeholders in the healthcare sector.
* Contributions to policy development and advocacy for Medical Laboratory Professionals.

CURRENT STATUS OF FG-MELSA
Today, FG-MELSA continues to serve as a vibrant and active association among all health students across Ghana & International, addressing the evolving needs of Medical Laboratory Students and professionals in Ghana. The Association remains committed to its mission and objectives, working towards a stronger, more united medical laboratory community.
