President-elect John Mahama's one-term presidency has been characterized by former majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as a rare and exceptional chance to enact much-needed constitutional amendments to enhance Ghanaian governance.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu concurred with a group of experts who claimed that Mahama's one-term presidency offers the perfect opportunity for a thorough constitutional revision.
He has no future stake, therefore no one would accuse him of abusing the system to further his own interests.
On December 28, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu clarified, "He has a very unique opportunity to take us where we want to go, to improve our governance, and ensure this constitution becomes development-oriented."
This occurs after President Akufo-Addo received the report from the Constitution Review Consultative Committee.
The report included important recommendations for changing Ghana's 1992 Constitution.
He also emphasized the historical background of Ghana's Constitution, which was drafted largely to bring stability to the country following a period of unrest.
He claimed that since the nation was now stable, it was time to concentrate on measures that would promote growth.
The difficulties Mr. Mahama would have in the first few months of his presidency were also acknowledged by Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
He said the first three months would be a hectic time because the president would have to prepare the national budget, assemble his cabinet, and get ministers authorized by Parliament.
The first three months—January, February, and March—will present challenges. However, he recommended that the constitutional review process be initiated in April, May, or June.
In order to guarantee broad support for the reforms, he asked President-elect Mahama to take advantage of this time to forge consensus among the public and stakeholders.
"I concur with Barker-Vormawor's statement that the concerns should remain in the forefront. In order to continue the reforms, we must rally public opinion," he continued.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized how crucial it is to match Ghana's development objectives with the constitutional review in order to guarantee that the reforms close governance gaps and advance the country.
President Mahama has a fantastic chance to make a lasting impression by supporting a Constitution that is focused on development and represents the goals of the populace. I think he can't afford to miss this chance," he said.
