The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia is proposing the creation of a commission to choose the recipients of national honors.
He claims that President Akufo-Addo's recent state awards have diminished the honors' integrity in light of some of the recipients.
According to General Mosquito, as he is known in the political community, individuals such as Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi, and Mavis Hawa Koomson, the outgoing MP for Awutu Senya East, do not merit the honors bestowed upon them by the president.
On Monday, December 30, 2024, President Akufo-Addo gave state honors to a few notable Ghanaians who have contributed to the country in a variety of ways.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia believes that the fact that Bryan Acheampong and Madam Hawa Koomson were both "Member Awardees" of the "Order of the Volta" has diminished the honors' credibility.
Given the factors that must be taken into account before one is granted such an honor, Asiedu Nketia claims that the two are not worthy of the prizes.
Asiedu Nketia claimed that the two MPs' inclusion in the awards has undermined its relevance during his speech at the NDC's 31st December Revolution celebration in Accra on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
"Have we overlooked the importance of State awards? State awards are important, but they must only be given to distinguished individuals who have battled for a just cause, he said, adding that it has been claimed that a country that does not honor its heroes is not worth dying for.
The chairman of the NDC claimed that giving "vigilante boys and girls" accolades as valuable as the National Honours does not serve as a positive role model for young people and proposed the formation of a commission to identify worthy candidates.
Additionally, we are teaching the next generation that it is acceptable to pick up guns and shoot people if we give state honors to vigilante boys and girls. If you get the chance to be a minister, it's acceptable to plunder state funds.
"I want to recommend to the rest of Ghanaians that we form a legitimate committee with legal support to help decide who should receive a national award," he said.
