If the NDC can gain traction in the Ashanti Region, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) should forget about breaking the proverbial eight, according to Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the former majority leader and departing Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame in the Ashanti Region.
The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) stronghold is the Ashanti Region, where the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is frantically trying to expand its support. In an attempt to win over disillusioned NPP voters, the party has stepped up its campaign activities in the area. John Dramani Mahama has made a few trips to the area in an attempt to win over unsure voters.
Although the major opposition party does not control the Ashanti Region in both presidential and parliamentary elections, it is one of the regions where they receive the most votes, according to Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, who was speaking on Kumasi-based Angel FM. "Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not be able to lead the National Democratic Congress to break the proverbial eight if John Dramani Mahama, the party's flagbearer, can secure 30% of the total valid votes cast in the Ashanti Region," he said.
According to Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the NPP is making every effort to maintain its hold on power in the Ashanti Region in order to keep the NDC from upsetting the results of the next general elections. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu stated in a video posted on Facebook by Kumasi Angel FM that his party will not give the NDC a chance in the Ashanti Region and that they will continue to have a firm hold on the area.
