Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a professor of political science at the University of Cape Coast, has attributed President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's roles to the NPP's loss in the general elections of 2024.
He says he blames Akufo-Addo for most of the things that "went wrong" during the NPP's eight-year tenure and resulted in its crushing defeat.
Talking about Ghana Dr. Asante Otchere clarified tonight on TV3 Monday, December 23, 2024, that Dr. Bawumia was responsible for the remaining 60% of the party's defeat, with President Akufo-Addo's actions in office alone accounting for 60% of the total.
"Remember the frame I used to use? The gods first infuriate the person they wish to destroy. They will take you down a route that you believe is correct, but by the time you say "jack," you've fallen into a ditch and will be destroyed.
He said, "I'll give the President about 60% of the credit for the NPP's demise, and Dr. Bawumia 40% for his behavior and conduct while in office."
Citing Akufo-Addo's stance on the anti-gay bill, which was a major worry for the majority of Ghanaians, he went on to say that one of the "intangibles" that people take into account "when taking a decision whether they want to vote for a party or not" is the President's lack of "appreciation of the value system that defines this country."
While the national anthem was playing, your daughter was speaking on the phone. You acted as though you had never seen the video, he said. "People are talking LGBT and you use the courts to obfuscate the issues, you go about beckoning chiefs to rise," he said.
Given that Akufo-Addo explicitly said that he was hired due to his economic skills, Dr. Bawumia claimed that his inability to manage Ghana's economy was his fault.
"In general, you may discuss the economy, and here is where Dr. Bawumia is useful. When it comes to the economy, you can't hold the president responsible because he provided a justification, explanation, and warning for his initial choice of Dr. Bawumia. However, if the economy is in ruins, what do you think? It must be Bawumia's fault. In no way did he lead the party as he ought to have," he continued.
The remarks made by Dr. Asante Otchere come after the NPP declared that it would form a committee to look into the reasons behind the party's loss in the most recent elections, which gave the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) a two-thirds majority in parliament and a significant lead in the presidential contest.
This was disclosed by Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the party's national chairman, during a press conference on Monday, December 23, 2024.
He stated that in order to identify the reasons for the loss, the proposed Election Review Committee will consult with the public and party stakeholders. Mr. Ntim pointed out that this will guide the party's reforms to make it stronger going forward.
"The party will establish an impartial and efficient Election Review Committee in January 2025 to conduct a postmortem on the election's results. The committee will discuss the causes and conditions that led to our defeat with the public and all party stakeholders," he said.
The party chairman went on to say that one important topic the committee would look into is whether a constitutional reform should be made to reorganize the party's internal decision-making process, which includes choosing party leaders and presidential and parliamentary candidates.
