Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has stated that he is confident the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will prevail in the legal issue over contested parliamentary seats.
Speaking to the media following the adjournment of hearings by the Accra High Court on December 31, 2024, Afenyo-Markin stated that the NPP will keep the contested seats in four constituencies and promised party supporters that due process would be followed.
Claims of anomalies in the Electoral Commission's (EC) redeclaration of the contested seats, which were first declared in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were rejected by the Member of Parliament for Effutu.
"We are completely patient with the law. You will receive results when you are certain that you are on solid ground, even though the legal process may be drawn out. There is no such thing as a pronouncement of results in Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Dome Kwabenya, the Electoral Commission itself has stressed.
"The EC is carrying out its duties, and they have already administratively deemed those results to be unlawful. Therefore, the claim that they have announced findings is irrelevant, he said.
Afenyo-Markin was hopeful about the result, saying, "We are confident that we will win in the end. Due process is being followed, thus there is no urgency. At first, they followed a violent course. We have at least succeeded in bringing them to court, teaching them decency, and making sure they follow the law. That's what we enjoy. This is the NPP; we support doing the right thing and uphold the rule of law. We are not at all concerned.
The NDC's preliminary objection to the NPP's mandamus application concerning the contested constituencies of Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South is being heard by the Accra High Court.
The court's ruling has been postponed to January 1, 2025, from its original December 31, 2024, date.
