Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the departing majority leader of Ghana's parliament, has urged the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to either keep Alban Bagbin as Speaker of the House or select a new speaker who is already a member of Parliament.
He asserts that the speaker should not be an outsider if the future John Mahama administration plans to replace him. He underlined that it would not be just to replace Alban Bagbin, who has performed admirably in his four years as Speaker.
"Mr. Speaker, you have granted Parliament unparalleled institutional authority, most likely as a result of your internal appointment as speaker. Mr. Speaker, I'm not sure if you'll be kept on or if someone else will be chosen. I'm confident that parliament will continue to gain if they choose to keep you. In the event that they decide to retire you—which I am sure they can do—a new Speaker should be chosen from within. During the House's first session following the protracted pause brought on by the deadlock over open seats, he declared, "We don't want an outsider."
They would prefer a current member of the house, Mr. Afenyo-Markin clarified, "someone who will understand us." "Mr. Speaker, let me commend you for the four years of your leadership in this House," he continued, praising Mr. Bagbin for his leadership. Despite our differences, it is evident that your leadership has prioritized the well-being of your members.
That cannot be taken away from you. Members of the House will gather to discuss outstanding issues before to the present Parliament's adjournment at the Accra International Conference Centre on Monday.
