The Police administration has been urged by President Akufo-Addo to reconsider how it plans to reduce violence following the election.
He claimed that more professional handling might have been done to address the violence that broke out following the elections on December 7, which were hailed as free and fair.
The call was made by the departing President on January 3 during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament.
He said that such a degree of violence shouldn't have resulted from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), making a quick compromise.
We should denounce the subsequent violent outbursts and the belief held by some that the victorious party should feel free to wreak havoc just because a presidential candidate had admitted loss. At one point, it seemed as though the police would be overwhelmed by the violence. In my opinion, they should quickly reevaluate their strategies for handling similar situations in the future," he said.
President Akufo-Addo explained, "I say so without prejudice to the excellent job they did in supervising the electoral process itself."
He hoped that there wouldn't be any commotion during the next elections.
"I hope we will soon get to the point where the needless tensions that are fabricated to go along with our elections vanish and elections are just something we do, and we do it with style and without any fuss," he said.
"The effective, commendable manner in which the Jean Mensah-led Electoral Commission has conducted the past two (2) elections of 2020 and 2024, despite their challenges," President Akufo-Addo said.
